The gunmen’s great escape from Bartica
    August 24, 2008, www.stabroeknews.com/news/

Six months after a gang of gunmen attacked the mining community of Bartica killing 12, it is now widely accepted that the perpetrators fled up the Essequibo River, eluding security forces which should have been on high alert after the earlier January 26 slaughter.
    . . .
The announcement of the find came after police officers had gone to Aranka Landing in the Cuyuni River to investigate the shooting of two men, who were transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital from the Bartica Hospital. Reports reaching this newspaper were that one of the men was wanted by the police regarding his connections to a “Buxton gang.” The man, Shemroy Lyte a resident of Linden was arrested and placed under police guard at the hospital and the next day was charged with receiving, relieving, comforting, harbouring, assisting and maintaining men from the gang, including wanted man Rondell ‘Fineman’ Rawlins between April 27 and June 16 at Christmas Falls and between February18, one day after the Bartica massacre, and April 1 at Wismar Linden.
The police have however not publicly made a link between the find, the Aranka shooting and Lyte’s subsequent arrest and charge. Three other men, one of them also with a Linden address, had earlier been charged with harbouring Rawlins and members of his gang.

Memories of Babi by Aranka Siegal
    Thursday, July 10, 2008, anokaberry.blogspot.com/

Piri is a city girl, but every year she goes to visit her grandmother Babi on her farm in the Ukrainian village of Komjaty. There is a lot that Piri finds strange, even scary, in Komjaty, such as the ghost in the form of a rooster who supposedly haunts the cemetery! But Piri loves country life: making corn bread, eating plums right off the tree, venturing out with her grandmother in the early morning to hunt for mushrooms. And during her time with Babi, Piri learns lessons that will stay with her all of her life, about the importance of honest hard work, of caring for the less fortunate, and of having the courage to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves.

    Aranka's Birthday
    Tuesday, 20 May 2008, zoeinchile.blogspot.com/

Aranka's birthday was on Friday 16th May but we thought we'd get started a bit earlier so on Thursday night lots of people headed over to Aranka's for drinks and finally good music (our friend Alex bought a cable so that we could connect the stereo to a computer and finally didn't have to listen to radio Carolina and it's eight songs. At midnight we sang happy birthday and then headed out to Subterraneo for a dance.

On Friday it was a repeat performance. We all met in a restaurant and then headed back to Pedro del Valdivia house for drinks and music. This time we all went to a club right up at the end of Las Condes which is a long road running almost up to the mountains. We had to take three buses and were freezing by time we got there. The music was OK but instead of hip-hop which it was supposed to be playing, it was regaton for two hours which can get a bit tedious. Still, we had good fun. The journey home was freezing too. We had to wait in the cold for half and hour and Aranka and I had to hug together for body warmth so as not to die from hypothermia.

We finally got home to our repective houses at six thirty and warm beds.

Aranka dredge owner was shot, stoned to death – wife
    May 28, 2008, www.stabroeknews.com/

A 48-year-old dredge owner was shot and stoned to death by two men on Sunday at his mining camp in Aranka; a small mining settlement along the Aranka River which branches off from the Cuyuni River, in the North-West region.

    Errol Inniss Errol Inniss

Errol Inniss, also known as “Tall Man”, of Pike Street Kitty, Georgetown was shot in the back and was wounded in the head, his reputed wife, Sharon Mars, said.
According to a police press release, investigations have revealed that around 2.20 pm on Sunday, Inniss was on his claim working when he was confronted by a man whom he had previously fired. An argument ensued between Inniss and the suspect, who pulled out a firearm discharging rounds at Inniss, which hit him about the body, then escaped, the release said.
When Stabroek News visited the deceased man’s home yesterday afternoon, wake preparations were just beginning. Inniss’s reputed wife of 18 years was in a state of shock, but said that she was at Aranka when the incident occurred.
“I went to Aranka Landing to make a phone call and that is where the message reach me. Some of the workers come running out from the camp and they tell me that Tall Man dead,” the 45-year-old Mars explained.
She told this newspaper that she started to scream, “he ain’t dead. I just talk to he,” after the men gave her the news.
Mars said that before she left their camp she and her reputed husband had shared a joke about the pants she wore that day. “That is the last I remember hearing from him,” she said.
Mars explained that the Aranka Landing area is equivalent to a mining settlement where a small number of residents live and shops are located. The landing is just a small clearing surrounded by dense forest, she said, and a track, that stretches approximately one mile through the trees, leads to Inniss’ dredge camp.
“I run through de track. I fall down about five times before I reach,” Mars recounted.
She added that along the track, there were shallow creeks and when she finally reached the camp she was wet.
“Workers who saw the entire thing tell me what happen,” she told Stabroek News. She said the suspect and another man approached Inniss as he was starting the water engine. Both men were armed with guns and the workers were afraid to intervene, Mars explained.
The widow said she was told that her reputed husband was standing near one of the abandoned mining pits as one of the men argued with him. She added that one of the men reportedly shot Inniss who jumped into the pit in an attempt to escape his attackers.
“The workers said that after they shot at him they start to stone he with big bricks before they finally escaped,” Mars said.
The woman said she arrived at the camp between 3.30 pm and 4 pm, but they could not find Inniss’s body in the muddied waters of the pit.
“We had to drain the dredge pit,” Mars explained, “and we ain’t find he until like 6 pm.”
The woman said that when his body was finally recovered from the pit she held on to him.
“He had mud all over he. The way I was holding he, I coulda feel that he get shoot in his back and his head was bleeding,” she recalled. Mars said could “feel” that her husband was dead.
Mars told this newspaper that the matter was reported to the police that same afternoon and the next day at approximately 5 am, she transported Inniss’s body to Bartica. The woman explained that it took five hours to travel from Aranka to Bartica where the closest police station was located.
The body was then taken from Bartica to the Lyken’s Funeral Parlour by police, she said, and a post-mortem examination will be conducted today.
Inniss leaves to mourn one child and five foster children along with many relatives and friends. “He was a good husband to me,” his wife lamented, “he take me with all my children and he de always good to us.”

    May 26, 2008, www.stabroeknews.com/

However, the law enforcers could not provide any further detail on the reported incident. “The police are investigating a report received about 15:30 today (yesterday) that a man was shot and killed at Aranka, Cuyuni River. No other information is available at this time,” the police release said.

    Dalit literature
    26-2-2008, www.hindu.com/

DALIT LITERATURE in Tamil is of recent origin and evolved in the past two decades. This book is a collection of verses of 12 well-known poets. They include Aranka Malliga, Alagiya Periyavan, Sukirtharani, Ithayavendan, Muthukanthan, Anpathavan, Mathivanan, Rajkumar and Gunasekeran.

The contents represent almost a new literature and politics in Tamil. The words used in the verses are not in normal literature. Poet Ithayavendan recites the anger of the exploited and the oppressed over generations thus: “Boiling blood and feelings in flames.”

The second section comprises articles by A. Marx and K. Kesavan on the exploitation of Dalits and their oppressed status in society. The third part is a review of Sivakami’s popular Dalit novel “Palayana Kalithalum”. In it a Dalit widow, Thankam, working in a farm is seduced by the farm owner. She is then beaten up by the upper caste people and caste violence follows.

Most of the poets and writers featured in the book are from the oppressed community. There is a school of thought that the truth of life is spelt out in literature only through “lived experience”. This collection is a specific example.

    I spy..
Posted by Aranka on Friday 22 February 2008, http://apekop83.wordpress.com/2008/02/22/i-spy/

Nothing post-worthy from my little world.
However.. I’m not saying I’m such a good citizen, but I did good today, a bit.
Since the back wheel of my bike is still flat (yes yes, I’ll get it fixed next week), I’m going to class by bus again. When I got off the bus (and was running late), I saw a woman with a stick for blind people and she was asking around if anyone could help her. Several people passed her, but no one said anything.
First I wanted to ignore it too as I was running late for class, but then I thought ‘fuck it, I need to help her’, so I asked what was wrong. It appeared she had gotten off her normal track because a bike passed her and she got disoriented. I asked her where she had to go and (luckily) it appeared she had to go the same was as I had. Even the same uni building, so that was convenient. I just hold her arm and guided her to the right street, then I hold the door for her and we parted our ways.

Children's love problems any advice girls?
    16-2-2008, www.scrapbook-bytes.com/chat/

Let me sketch out what is going on. Aranka my youngest is 6, going to be 7 next week. She's in class with 25 kids, no problems she loves most of the kids. She's seated on an 'island' of 4 tables, with 1 other girl and 2 boys.
the 2 boys are both very sweet on their own ways. W is quiet and calm and cuddly, R is busy, an attention seeker. Bot are so much in love that they constantly try to make eachother look bad to get Aranka's attention. Now both boys come over for lunch occasionally 1 by 1 and it's NEVER a problem. However in class they do fight to get Aranka's attention. Aranka on her turn get's very sad from it all. and the last 2 weeks she cried 9 evenings about the boys fighting.
So R came over for lunch again and I told him that maybe instead of fighting they could better try to be friends the 3 of them.
However I did not get angry, didnt raise my voice, it was just something that came up because they both mentioned the other boys name. So it wasnt a lecture or anything. His mom felt I was outof line to ask him to stop fighting....
Now this mom went to the teacher, and the teacher claims she has never witnessed them fighting or calling eachother names.
I told the teacher i'm certain it happens in class cause Aranka is not a liar. Mind you this teacher NEVER sees anything she has given classes to my other 2 children as well and i find her incompetent but that's my opinion. since the other 2 boys are oldest kids, those mothers do not know this teacher or her lack of knowing what is going on, so they fly blind with what the teacher says.
Yesterday the teacher asked me after school what was going on and why i felt the need to tell the boy to not fight. I told her when Aranka cries 9 out of 14 evenings I have every right to try to make it a better situation for all 3. However she keeps saying NOTHING goes on. Now 1 of the moms was present when the teacher asked me what was going on, the other mom was not.
So not much later the other mom of the other boy calls me, to tell me I should mind my own buisness and when those 2 boys fight it is between them. I told her they fight over MY daughter and she cries about it, so it is my buisness as well.
Yesterday evening Aranka had swimming lessons and the other girl from their table swims with her. Her mother asked me, is Aranka getting tired of the fights allready?
I asked her what fights, she replied the boys trying to get her love and attention and who's more sweet and so on. So THIS girl also claims these boys fight.
I asked her if she wanted to adres this to the teacher monday.
Now the 2 moms of the boys are both mad at me, for trying to solve this issue for all 3 of them. I mean 6 years old should not fight over who they get married to right?
The boy moms both feel that it is something between the boys only, and I should not have mentioned it. I still feel because they make my girl cry I have every right to try to see if this can be solved.
Should I demand that Aranka will be seated on another table, should I do nothing and see how it goes after the weekend?
and am I really a terrible mom for trying to solve my daughter's sadness???

    Significant Gold Anomaly at Aranka
    Fri, 25 Jan 2008, poorimpulsecontrol.net/blog/

TORONTO, ONTARIO -- 01/25/08 -- Guyana Goldfields Inc. (TSX: GUY) and Aranka Gold Inc. (TSX VENTURE: ARK) are pleased to announce the discovery of significant gold trends on the Aranka group of properties. The 275,000 acre land package is being jointly explored by the two Companies on a 50/50 basis. The southern boundary of this land package lies approximately 30 km. from the Guyana Goldfield's Aurora Property which has announced a 4.65 million ounce gold resource (1.97 indicated and 2.68 inferred see Guyana Goldfields press release dated October 10, 2007) and which is currently the subject of ongoing drilling for continued resource expansion and delineation.

    Aranka Deep Auger Gold Anomaly
An east-west trending 650-metre long gold anomaly was defined by a 1.0 g/t Au contour in the southern portion of the Aranka Properties. The anomaly was delineated through deep auger soil sampling from 163 grid stations averaging 3.8 metres in depth. A 25m x 50 m grid was laid out to guide the sampling. To avoid contamination from historical workings and tailings however, only stations from the relatively undisturbed hills were sampled.

The gold anomaly appears to pinch and splay to the west but is quite wide (up to 200 metres width) and is open to the east.

The soil gold anomaly juxtaposed with northeast trending, moderately northwest-dipping quartz veins and stockworks mapped and sampled from excavator-trenches and local miner's pits. Channel samples across the widths of the exposed quartz structures returned as high as 83.20 g/t Au over 1 metre.

The initial drilling in the area targeted the north-west trending copper mineralization drilled by the Geological Survey of British Guyana. There were indications in the old data that the gold might be related to the copper mineralization. The drilling results indicated that the gold is not consistently associated with the copper. Interpretations from new geological data suggest that the copper mineralization is older and occurring as lenses parallel to the northwest trending foliation in the metavolcanics. Gold on the other hand is associated with northeast trending quartz veins and stockworks cutting across the regional foliation. Quartz stockworks are usually well developed in weakly metamorphosed tuffaceous rocks.

Behind You I See the Millions
    Friday, January 11, 2008, poorimpulsecontrol.net/blog/

In restaurants, I order only what I can't make myself. Lately, I want soup. Today, minstrel mentioned pho at the same moment I was searching the NJ restaurant listings for a good Hungarian restaurant. The only one I could find is the one in a formal basement in New Brunswick. I've been there. It's okay, but I longed for the kasha and mushroom sauce and creamy paprikash of Aranka, a restaurant that moved from town down Route 27 to Franklin Park. One night, a friend and I drove down there and found the building painted pink and containing an ice cream parlor. We were crushed! Since then, I haven't found a new Hungarian restaurant to love. My friends and I also lost the Russian restaurant that was like a trip through the looking glass with roasted meat. So I've been thinking it's almost time to make a pilgrimage to Veselka in New York for the borscht. Pete's justifiably fussy about food. I wonder if he'll touch pink soup - which, if you haven't tried it, is as close to unsightly public rapture as you want to be unless you're Jenna Jamison. Eventually, we went to the Greek restaurant, where I had the arni fricase with artichokes. I'm reconsidering. I might be able to cook that.
I've never had pho and now I must try it.
